A fantastic battle of cat and mouse against the backdrop of one of the bloodiest battles of the second world war: Stalingrad. Zaitsev has been making a reputation for himself by picking off high ranking German officials in Stalingrad. Following a rather crude PR campaign to boost Soviet morale, both the Soviets and the German army realise the importance of Zaitsev life (and death). To counter Zaitsev, the Germans call in a sharpshooter of their own, Major König, who is given the brief of killing Zaitsev.
Towards the climax of the film, König is waiting for Zaitsev in the Red October factory district of Stalingrad, discreetly concealed under a sheet of metal. They are both sniping, waiting for the other to make a mistake when Kulikov, Zaitsev's closest friend, enters and explains to Zaitsev that Tania Chernova, Zaitsev's bit of skirt, has died in an explosion while she was trying to evacuate the city.
Kulikov wants to help Vassily find König and so he takes off his helmet and raises his head up. König fires a single shot that passes straight through his head and he reloads. His friend's death though is not wasted, as Zaitsev relocates.
König thinks the man he has just killed was Zaitsev and he makes his way towards the blown out window. He suddenly freezes when he sees out of the corner of his eye Zaitsev standing next to a train. Knowing the game is up, König casually takes his hat off and looks at Zaitsev. Vassily fires a bullet that passes right through Konig's left eye, killing him.
