As Donnie Darko and his new girlfriend Gretchen, whom he'd just started getting to know over the last few days, visit town legend "Grandma Death"'s house to talk to her, they find her cellar door open and Grandma nowhere to be found.

At this moment, they are suddenly attacked by Seth, the school bully, and his friend; who had broken into Grandma Death's basement in hopes of stealing a gem stash she was rumored to have. The fight quickly finds its way outside, Seth is holding a knife to Donnie's neck to make sure he won't live through the night to tell anyone, Gretchen is badly injured and thrown out onto the road.

Before Donnie can fight off Seth and help her, a red car suddenly speeds by and runs her over, killing her. This causes Seth and his friend to run, and Donnie discovers that the driver is none other then a live Frank, the rabbit-masked apparition who had been haunting him throughout the movie.

Later, after Donnie has warped back through time and closed the alternate reality and thus restored order (although at the cost of his own life), Gretchen is alive and well again, never knowing the boy who had indirectly saved her life.
