During a fight between Donnie and school bully Seth, which results in Donnie at knifepoint and Gretchen (q.v.) badly hurt out on the road, a red car suddenly comes driving in and accidentally runs over her, killing her.
The presence of more people causes Seth and his friend to run as the car turns to face them. Donnie gets up in time to see the door open. First, a passenger dressed as a clown emerges, shocked and horrified that the driver had run over someone. Then, we see the driver emerge. He is wearing a full humanoid rabbit costume and carrying a black metallic mask that Donnie is all too familiar with by now.
Yes, the driver is none other then an incarnation of Frank, the mysterious costumed apparition that had been haunting Donnie throughout the movie. Was this what the spectre meant when it said "I'm sorry..." for no apparent reason when it appeared at the theatre and removed its mask?
Frank is not sharing the same horror that his companion has at the situation, and instead angrily demands what Gretchen was doing out in the middle of the road, then asks Donnie if she's alive.
Donnie responds by pulling out the gun he had taken from home, aims it at Frank's head, and pulls the trigger, shooting him in the eye and killing him instantly.
Frank the Bunny is awesome, he's already an iconic screen character.
I love the way James Duvall touches his eye after Donnie dies as he remembers what could have happened in the parallel universe, like a bad dream.
