Of all the killings Stallone has ever committed on film, by far his most callous and unusually cruel has to be the one against a completely innocent security guard in "Daylight". The poor bastard is badly injured and needs medical attention and human comfort. Stallone decides this is too much effort, and instead leaves him to die alone in the dark, as the water level slowly rises to drown him. In a bizarre attempt to assuage his conscience, he decides to jam a steel pipe into the poor man's mouth to serve as a gum-laceratingly painful makeshift snorkel. This ensures that his last despair-filled moments on earth are prolonged for as long as possible.
Hopefully the DVD contains a deleted scene where Latura has to explain to the man's grieving family and girlfriend how he did all he could to save him.
The guy's name is George Tyrell, played by Stan Shaw. Also, there is no mention of the fact he is crushed under a truck, which I think should be noted. It has been a while since I've seen this film (I only found out the character's name thanks to the IMDb goofs section), but I seem to recall that George is severely wounded and they couldn't save him in any way due to the rapidly rising water level - hence the pipe. It's likely he would have been dead before the water reached the top of the pipe.
On another note, isn't this the one where Viggo Mortensen gets crushed? I would submit, but I like to do full write-ups with a good memory of events.
Many thanks for the name.
I have to admit, the second time I saw this it didn't seem quite so callous as I remembered at the cinema!
Why "Crushed"? more like "Pointless". (Does Tyrell have any lines or significance?)
P.S. the headers still say "Security Guard (?)"
Tyrell does have some degree of signifigance, as he is the guy who finds all the survivors.
Yeah, I got this on DVD recently and George's death is nothing like described in the writeup, unfortunately (or is that fortunately?). They had to leave him behind because he was too injured to swim and would've drowned; in fact, he insisted Kit (Stallone's character) abandon him, but first made him promise to give his bracelet to his girlfriend, which Kit does at the end of the film. Heroic effort is made by the entire group to save George's life before it becomes all too apparent he can't be saved, so he tells Kit to leave him. Also, they only use the pipe in his mouth when trying to get the pickup truck off him; he elects not to have a breathing aid when left later on.
I really think this one (as well as Sonny from The Godfather) needs a rewrite.
Yes, I hold my hands up for being at fault on this one. I think my memory got badly confused and I made up my own version!
