Smiley is one of Robert G. Durant's gang members, who participated in the brutal torture and murder of Dr. Peyton Westlake. He later participates in the siege of Darkman's warehouse hideout, wherein he and fellow gang member Rudy(q.v.) storm the building wielding assault rifles and, being brainless henchmen, commit the oldest mistake in the book, by splitting up.

Smiley becomes an unwitting tool of Darkman's revenge, and is tricked into blowing away Rudy(q.v.) by accident when he thinks he is killing Darkman. Smiley barely has time to register the fact he has just murdered his friend before Darkman, wearing a Smiley mask, appears beside him. After complimenting Smiley on his shooting, Darkman proceeds to pound the absolute crap out of him, beating him to a bloody pulp. He then leaves to deal with gang boss Durant who is riding around in a helicopter outside, and although Darkman leaves him alive, Smiley still is not long for this world.

At the beginning of the film when Durant's gang members had attacked Westlake's lab, Durant destroyed it by leaking flammable gas from some canisters and then setting up a novelty drinking bird to ignite a butane lighter, thereby igniting the gas and blowing the lab sky-high. As Smiley recovers from Darkman's beating, he notices that Darkman has recreated Durant's death trap a hundredfold: he has the drinking bird and the lighter, but has loosened the valves on ALL the gas canisters in the warehouse. Smiley rushes towards the bird and lighter and attempts to grab them, only to discover that it is just a holographic duplicate and the REAL bird and lighter are all the way across the room.

However, by the time Smiley realises this, the bird ignites the lighter, and Smiley dies in an explosion that obliterates the entire building.
