Bernard is the ultimate creepy British manservant: cold, calculating, and barely flinches when he gets burned on the hand with a lit cigarette. Ruthless billionaire Mrs. Fitzwaring, incorrectly thinking that Dexter Cornell knows she murdered her husband, instructs Bernard to take Dex out to the local tar pits and dispose of him there. Bernard complies, but Mrs. Fitzwaring's rebellious daughter Cookie interferes and frees Dex, then commandeers Bernard's luxury sedan and tries to run him over with it.
Bernard simply ends up on the hood, clinging for dear life and holding his pistol at the same time. Cookie's wild driving makes the gun go off, and Bernard accidentally kills his employer's daughter in this fashion. Like most movie drivers who die behind the wheel, Cookie's foot remains on the accelerator and so the sedan drives right into the tar pits. Although Bernard falls in, he manages to save himself by climbing up over the slowly sinking automobile and onto dry land.
Dripping with tar, Bernard engages Dex in a brief slugfest on the wooden bridge that spans the tar pits. During the struggle, Dex manages to knock Bernard off the bridge, sending the coldhearted English servant plunging back in to the tar. Without a handy car to use as a life preserver, and in fact without anything to grab hold of, Bernard immediately sinks down to his gooey doom.
