Charlie Travis is a man with a lot of baggage to take into the Congo, besides his survival gear that is. His father is R.B. Travis, the president of the telecommunications conglomerate TraviCom, and his ex-fiancée is Dr. Karen Ross, who works for his father's company. Charlie and several others have been sent into the wilds of the African jungle to locate flawless blue diamonds for use in TraviCom's satellites (the science in this film is a bit dodgy). Not only does he have past history with Karen to whom he must report, but he's feeling tremendous pressure from Daddy to succeed.

But Charlie's problems are about to get a lot worse. His colleague Jeffrey Weems stumbles across the ruins of an ancient city, later revealed to be the lost city of Zsinj, and hurriedly gets Charlie to show it to him. Charlie is amazed, but wants Jeffrey to return with him to their base camp so they can get back to work. Jeffrey however says he has to go get his backpack, and disappears through a hole in one of the city's crumbly stone walls.

After a cutaway to another scene at the TraviCom headquarters back in Houston, we return to Charlie to find him still waiting for Jeffrey. He has a seat on some stone steps and enjoys a candy bar while he waits (Hershey's Milk Chocolate product placement), and suddenly something flies out of the hole Jeffrey went into, landing at Charlie's feet. "Now you're throwin' stuff at me," he mutters, and reaches down to pick it up. He is shocked to discover it is a human eyeball, with the optic nerve still attached.

Charlie barely has time to register this when he hears a growling sound behind him. He turns, sees something off camera, and lets loose a not-too-convincing "Aaahhhhh!!!" of terror. This is the last time we'll ever see Charlie alive. We later learn he and Jeffrey got killed by the guardians of Zsinj, a breed of vicious grey gorillas. Kahega finds the candy bar wrapper on the stone steps, and, later, Karen and Peter Elliot find both Charlie and Jeffrey's corpses.

I didn't know The Chin was in this film!

How come the dialouge isn't in bold? ("Aaagh!", "now you're throwing stuff at me!")
