Curiously, this film begins with the death of the main protagonist. Father time catches up to us all and we each choose to meet this foe in our own way. For Kane, he determined he was going to meet his maker on the landing of his staircase clutching a riduculously fragile snowglobe.
As he falls to the ground he utters a single word -"Rosebud"- and drops the snowglobe dramatically down the staircase, where it shatters at the foot of the stairs. Kane's final words are a mystery and provide the theme for the whole film; an investigative journalist's quest to discover the meaning of Kane's last words.
Only at the end of the film do we find out Rosebud is the name of Kane's childhood sled, which he left behind when he left his parents to live with some rich old man (it would not be allowed in this day and age!). It then becomes clear to the audience that Kane's utterance was to signify that he really wanted to go sledging before he died.
A long overdue one. Now we have the most well-known death scene of all time.
Notice that no one is around to actually hear him say "Rosebud"?

Yeah that is a major plot hole.
But also I want to bring this up: what kind of weirdo names and misses his sled? Does he miss his childhood sofa "Ficuspetal" too?
