The character is killed, but their body subsequently (or sometimes instantly) vanishes into the ether, often accompanied by a mystical sound effect. This technique usually implies that the deceased is too powerful to leave a mere corpse behind, and can often hint that they are not in fact dead, but have transcended to another plane of existence. In less grandiose productions, the effect can simply be a cheap alternative to showing a tacky monster corpse.
