Any death that is voluntarily chosen in order to help or thwart others. The result need not be successful, provided the intent is there (and the character dies!)

Note that a spur of the moment rescue attempt that ends badly doesn't automatically qualify for this category. We have to be reasonably sure the martyr willingly accepts they are going to die if they act, but act anyway.
