Several years after being betrayed by Messala, Judah Ben-Hur races Messala in a chariot race. It is not long before the two men dominate the race. Messala attempts to kill Judah by using a chariot with spikes on the wheels designed to rip other chariots apart.
But after several minutes, it becomes clear that Judah will not yield, and despite the spikes on the wheel of Messala's chariot, the wheel falls off, and Messala is thrown out of the chariot. Still holding the reins, Messala is dragged behind his team of horses. As if this was not painful enough, he is also run over by another chariot driver.
Mortally wounded, Messala collapses in the dirt and is carried away as Judah Ben-Hur crosses the finish line. He refuses medical treatment until Judah arrives. Once Judah arrives, Messala tells him that the race hasn't ended, and that his mother and sister are still alive before he finally shuffles off to the choir invisible.
What was he? Who killed him? What did they kill him with?
he is just run over by a chariot and he dies from injuries sustained after being dragged around the circuit.
Wouldn't this be animal-related as well, since he is both trampled and dragged?
I forgot to mention the souvenir hunter who grabbed Messala's helmet, waved it in the air a couple times and ran off with the rest of the crowd.
It is also a "REVENGE"...
It certainly is - one of the most classic examples of that category in fact. I have now updated the death.
I will try to rewrite the review at some point, as the backstory of events needs explaining to put the scene into the context it deserves.
I've personally voted this death as a 9 - it is extremely powerful, as is the film as a whole.
He deserves the Oscar...absolutely!
