The Alien franchise continues with a rather unbelievable plot twist. Having crash landed on a world with a high security prison on it, we soon discover that another alien had stowed itself on board the ship in Aliens and managed to impregnate Ripley while she was in stasis. Oh, in case you are wondering, Newt (the cute girl) and Hicks (the cool Marine) were killed in the crash....that tidies up that continuity error then.
The alien that impregnated Ripley spends most of the film running around the prison, killing highly dangerous criminals. This proves to be a bit of fun for the alien, but is a side issue as its primary purpose is to ensure Ripley gives birth to an alien queen which will propagate the species on this planet. As if this wasn't bad enough, to compound the prison's problems, the Company who sent the team to recover an alien in Aliens is aware of the creature growing inside Ripley, and is quickly closing in on the prison to take her back to Earth.
Ripley is a stubborn character though, and is not prepared to allow the birth of this creature. As the Company closes in around her, killing people indiscriminately, Ripley manages to get herself next to the prison's main blast furnace. At this point, the Company is in a quandary; it can't afford to kill Ripley and risk killing the alien, but Ripley is preparing to jump into the furnace and kill the alien.
Despite the protestations of the Company man, who tries to appeal to Ripley's desire for self preservation, Ripley decides to kill herself and, by default, the alien queen too. She falls back into the furnace, arms crossed over her chest. Halfway through her descent, the alien queen bursts out of her chest, and Ripley, with her last strength, manages to grab hold of it and stop it escaping as she splashes into the magma.
I tended to see Ripley's final moments as her embracing the new Queen Alien, and almost cuddling it like a child, holding it to her chest.
I also seem to remember that her dying at the end of the film was Sigourney's way of guarenteeing the end of the series. Seems she didn't predict the "cloning" twist!
Farewell Ripley. Jidai wa yƫsha no densetsu o kataritsugu,
