Dr. Whitcombe is one of the nine doctors who performed the operation on Victoria Phibes that ended her life, causing her horribly scarred husband, Anton Phibes, to go on some biblical style killing spree to end the doctors’ lives.
By this point of the film, only three of the doctors have survived this spree, but this will not be true for very long. Inspector Trout attempts to round up the remaining three doctors and keep them safe until Phibes is apprehended.
Dr. Whitcombe is found rather easily by the police who try to warn him to keep safe.
This proves to be a waste of time, as the camera cuts to the police opening the door, a *thunk* sound is heard in the background and we see doctor Whitcombe impaled to the partition wall by a brass unicorn head, which has been shot from a catapult from across the street.
This leads to one of the funniest scenes in history when trying to unscrew the doctor (and spiral horn) from the wall:
"I think it's a left screw thread! - Ah yes, that's it!"
We then see the body being rotated from the vantage point of an elderly old git, who resents being disturbed by the sight of head and feet spinning around!
why did Trout get the door for Whitcombe instead of Whitcombe opening the door?
Because Detective Pike is a gentleman. Although it wouldn't have changed much, maybe he wouldn't have gotten pegged to the partition as he did, but he still would've been the one in the doorway!
Then, if you really know Phibes, you know he has Athena on his side.
