Will is the Marshal of the town of Contention, where Ben Wade has been escorted to so he can catch the 3:10 train to Yuma Prison. Unfortunately, Ben Wade's gang has come looking for him, but local law enforcement is there to protect Wade.

That is until Charlie offers $200 to any man who guns down Wade's capturers. Not surprisingly, the town folks join in on the action, increasing the firepower considerably. The Marshal has had enough and he's decided he's "not going to die here today".

Butterfield follows the Marshal into the lobby of the bar, but the Marshal has made his mind up.
"I'll double your money!" offers Butterfield.
"Let's go, boys," says Will to his deputies.
"Please, do you really want to see us shot down in the sheet?" begs Butterfield.
"This thing happened in Bisbee," Will tells him. "Why bring your troubles to Contention?"
Taking out their guns, Will and his men go outside.

They walk out onto the porch of the bar and lay down their guns. Wade's gang don't play by the rules of honour and the trio are soon mercilessly fired upon.
