In a London ravaged by hordes of people infected with the deadly "rage" virus, Selena and Mark have teamed up for mutual protection.
"Rage" turns its victims into crazed, berserker killers - they are like flesh eating zombies that have been bingeing on caffeine. Crucially, it is spread through blood, which is a vital plot device during the whole film.
So, when the pair meet Jim - who has been in a coma and therefore doesn't have a clue what is going on - they do their best to share with him the safety tips they have worked out. These include such insightful gems as not travelling alone if you can avoid it, and not going out at night.
The fact that the entire country has been wiped out is something of a shock for poor old Jim, and he wants to go and check his parents house. Selena and Mark tell him it's pointless, but escort him there anyway, and they are soon all camped out in the house, with Jim's dead parents slowly rotting upstairs (they took a suicide pact rather than become Infected).

Not really how you want to see your parents when you go and visit them for the first time in ages...
Rather understandably, Jim can't get to sleep and lights a candle near a window. Sadly his earlier safety talk didn't include not drawing attention in such a blatant way and a pair of Infected soon burst through the window and start causing bloody carnage.
Mark bears the brunt of this assault, and it is left to Selena to defend the house with her trusty machete. After the fight Selena doesn't lay her weapon down, but instead interrogates Jim to find out if he is cut, or if any blood went into his mouth. Jim denies this, which proves to be a shrewd move given what happens next.

Mark has been cut, and his innocent expression isn't fooling anyone!
Mark is guiltily trying to stem the flow of blood from his messed up arm and is clearly infected. He manages a token plea for clemency before Selena executes him, in a particularly brutal fashion. Gobs of flesh and bits of forearm get splattered around the room - it's not Selena's fault, a machete just isn't all that elegant a weapon!

This is how to deal with former friends who turn into zombies!

Mercy Killing?
I'm pretty sure it wasn't a mercy killing so much as they wanted to survive and didn't want one more infected to fight.
